Golf Crest founders, Ed and Anne Woolley spent a day golfing at Château des Vigiers last week. Château des Vigiers is in the heart of Bergerac wine country in South Western France.
They share their experience with us ….
“Our guests were excited to visit the idyllic Château des Vigiers for the first time. It was a bright sunny day and the autumnal colours of the Dordogne countryside were sensational. Golf was on the menu. The course looked in good shape, despite some previous wet weather. There were plenty of hotel guests and golfers around to create a great atmosphere.
“Having checked in and loaded our buggies, we had time for some putting practice before our 11.30am tee time. Vigiers is made up of three stunning 9 hole courses. We played the Valley and Vines courses. The Lac course was closed for airation work.
Golfing: The Valley Course
“Our first tee was the par 4 on the Valley course. As suggested in the name of this course, it enjoys spectacular holes following the contours of the valley. There were some tricky holes including the very steep uphill par 3, third hole, which made club selection crucial. Unfortunately, we were all woefully short off the green. Where we thought we had selected ample club, this proved not to be the case.
“The course climbs out of the valley where we then joined the Vines course for our second nine holes.
Golfing: The Vines Course
“As the Vines course sits on higher ground, you enjoy beautiful and far reaching views of the rolling countryside of the Dordogne. Surrounded by the Vines course and vineyards, this really is a memorable course.
“The 9th hole (our 18th) is a challenging par 4 with a spectacular approach to the green with the back drop of the Château. As designed, the green is a two-tier sloping green which certainly tests even the best golfers.
“One of the great challenges of playing at Château des Vigiers is that the greens can be incredibly fast and undulating. For us amateur golfers, we came to realise that by golfing later in the season after some rain, the greens were a little more friendly. Playing here in the summer they can truly punish you if you are not accurate.
“We were a group of four, which made for an ideal friendly match play competition. It was a tight match all the way to the 18th hole. Sociably, we halved the match!!
“After the game, we enjoyed a drink on the terrace, overlooking beautiful Château grounds. We took time to reflect on our day of golfing. Our guests agreed that they are looking forward to returning with Golf Crest to sample some of our other Bordeaux tour courses next summer”.
